Der Queensland Lungfish, Neoceratodus Forsteri ist das einzige überlebende Mitglied der Familie Ceratodontidae und bestellen Ceratodontiformes. Es ist eine von nur sechs vorhandenen Lungenfischarten in der Welt. Endemisch nach Australien, sind die Ceratodontidae eine alte Familie, die zur Unterklasse Sarcopterygii gehört, oder fleischig-finnierte Fische. Fossile Aufzeichnungen dieser Gruppe gehen zurück 380 Millionen Jahre, um die Zeit, als die höheren Wirbeltierklassen sich zu entwickeln begannen. Fossilien von Lungenfischen, die fast identisch mit dieser Art sind, wurden im nördlichen New South Wales aufgedeckt, was darauf hinweist, dass Neoceratodus für weit über 100 Millionen Jahre nahezu unverändert geblieben ist und es zu einem lebenden Fossil und einer der ältesten lebenden Wirbeltier-Gattungen auf dem Planeten macht. Es ist einer von sechs vorhandenen Vertretern der alten Luft-atmenden Dipnoi, die während der Devon-Zeit blühten und ist das primitivste überlebende Mitglied dieser Linie. Die fünf anderen Süßwasser-Lungenfischarten, vier in Afrika und eine in Südamerika, sind sehr morphologisch von N. forsteri verschieden.
