Belgrad (/ bɛlɡreɪd /; Serbo-Kroatisch: Београд / Beograd; (hören), Namen in anderen Sprachen) ist die Hauptstadt und größte Stadt Serbiens. Es liegt am Zusammenfluss der Sava- und Donau-Flüsse, wo die Pannonische Tiefebene auf den Balkan trifft. Sein Name übersetzt in die weiße Stadt. Die Stadt hat eine Bevölkerung von 1,23 Millionen, während über 1,65 Millionen Menschen in ihrem U-Bahn-Bereich (die administrative Grenzen der Stadt Belgrad umfassen) leben. Eine der bedeutendsten prähistorischen Kulturen Europas, die Kultur der Vinča, entwickelte sich im 6. Jahrtausend vor dem Belgrader Gebiet. In der Antike bewohnten Thraco-Dacians die Region, und nach 279 v. Chr. Eroberten die Kelten die Stadt und nannten es Singidūn. Es wurde von den Römern während der Herrschaft des Augustus erobert und erhielt Stadtrechte in der Mitte des 2. Jahrhunderts. Es wurde von den Slawen in den 520er Jahren besiedelt und wechselte mehrere Male zwischen dem byzantinischen Reich, dem fränkischen Reich, dem bulgarischen Reich und dem Königreich Ungarn, bevor es die Hauptstadt des serbischen Königs Stephen Dragutin (1282-1316) wurde. Im Jahre 1521 wurde Belgrad vom Osmanischen Reich erobert und wurde zum Sitz des Sanjak von Smederevo.
