Brom
Brom ist ein chemisches Element mit dem Symbol Br und Atomzahl von 35. Es ist in der Halogengruppe. Das Element wurde unabhängig von zwei Chemikern, Carl Jacob Löwig und Antoine Jerome Balard, im Jahre 1825-1826 isoliert. Elementar Brom ist eine rauchende rotbraune Flüssigkeit bei Raumtemperatur, korrosiv und giftig, mit Eigenschaften zwischen denen von Chlor und Iod. Freies Brom tritt in der Natur nicht auf, tritt aber als farblose lösliche kristalline Mineralhalogenidsalze auf, analog zum Speisesalz. Brom ist seltener als etwa drei Viertel der Elemente in der Erdkruste; Allerdings hat die hohe Löslichkeit von Bromid-Ion seine Anhäufung in den Ozeanen verursacht, und kommerziell wird das Element leicht aus Sole-Pools, vor allem in den Vereinigten Staaten, Israel und China extrahiert. Rund 556.000 Tonnen wurden im Jahr 2007 produziert, eine Menge ähnlich dem weitaus reichlicheren Element Magnesium. Bei hohen Temperaturen wandeln sich Organobrominverbindungen leicht in freie Bromatome um, ein Verfahren, das die Wirkung des Stoppens von radikalischen chemischen Kettenreaktionen bewirkt.
