Der Bucentaur war die staatliche Galeere der Hunde von Venedig. Es wurde jedes Jahr am Himmelfahrtstag bis 1798 benutzt, um die Doge an die Adria zu bringen, um die "Heirat des Meeres" zu veranstalten - eine Zeremonie, die jedes Jahr auf dem "Festa della Sensa" das Venedig symbolisch zum Meer verheiratet hat. Die Gelehrten glauben, dass es vier große Lastkähne gab, der erste bedeutende Bucentaur wurde im Jahre 1311 gebaut. Ein zweistöckiger schwimmender Palast, dessen Hauptsalon eine Sitzkapazität von 90 hatte. Der Thron des Dogen war im Heck, und der Biege trug eine Gestalt, die Gerechtigkeit mit Schwert und Schuppen darstellt. Der Lastkahn wurde von 168 Ruderern angetrieben, und weitere 40 Matrosen waren verpflichtet, es zu manövrieren. Das Schiff wurde 1798 auf Napoleons Befehlen zerstört, um seinen Sieg bei der Eroberung von Venedig zu symbolisieren. Im Februar 2008 kündigte die Fondazione Bucintoro ein Projekt von 20 Millionen Euro an, um den 1729 Bucentauren wieder aufzubauen.
