Casuistry / kæʒuːɨstri /, oder Fall-basierte Argumentation, ist eine Methode in angewandter Ethik und Jurisprudenz, die oft als eine Kritik der prinzip- oder regelbasierten Argumentation gekennzeichnet ist. Das Wort "casuistry" stammt aus dem lateinischen casus. Casuistry ist Argumentation verwendet, um moralische Probleme durch die Extraktion oder Erweiterung der theoretischen Regeln aus bestimmten Fällen und Anwendung dieser Regeln auf neue Instanzen zu lösen. Der Begriff wird auch gemeinhin als pejorative verwendet, um die Verwendung von cleverem, aber unklugem Argument zu kritisieren, vor allem in Bezug auf moralische Fragen. Die vereinbarte Bedeutung von "casuistry" ist im Fluss. Der Begriff kann verwendet werden, um entweder eine vermutlich akzeptable Form des Denkens oder eine Form von Argumentation zu beschreiben, die inhärent unsund und trügerisch ist. Die meisten oder alle philosophischen Wörterbücher listen den neutralen Sinn als die erste oder einzige Definition auf. Auf der anderen Seite stellt das Oxford English Dictionary fest, dass das Wort "ften auf eine quibbling oder ausweichende Art des Umgangs mit schwierigen Fällen der Pflicht" angewendet wird.
