Ein centurion, auch hekatontarch in griechischen Quellen, oder, in der Mitte der byzantinischen Zeit, kentarch, war ein professioneller Offizier der römischen Armee nach den Marian Reformen von 107 B.C. Die meisten Zenturios befehligten 80 Männer, aber ältere Zenturionen befehligten Kohorten oder nahmen ältere Stabrollen in ihrer Legion. Zenturios wurden auch in der römischen Marine gefunden. Jahrhunderte oder Centuriae, bedeutet Stamm oder Firma. Theoretisch spürt dieses Wort seine Wurzeln zu centum, das für hundert lateinisch ist, aber diese Verbindung ist weitgehend umstritten oder missachtet.

Most centurions commanded 80 men but senior centurions commanded cohorts, or took senior staff roles in their legion. Centurions were also found in the Roman navy. Centuries, or Centuriae, means tribe or company. Theoretically, this word traces its roots to centum which is Latin for one hundred, but that connection is widely disputed or disregarded.
