Venenivibrio stagnispumantis erhält Energie durch Oxidation von Wasserstoffgas. Viele Mikroorganismen in dunklen Regionen der Ozeane verwenden auch Chemosynthese, um Biomasse aus einzelnen Kohlenstoffmolekülen zu produzieren. Es können zwei Kategorien unterschieden werden. In den seltenen Orten, an denen Wasserstoffmoleküle zur Verfügung stehen, kann die aus der Reaktion zwischen CO2 und H2 verfügbare Energie groß genug sein, um die Produktion von Biomasse zu fördern. Alternativ ergibt sich in den meisten ozeanischen Umgebungen Energie für die Chemosynthese aus Reaktionen, bei denen Substanzen wie Schwefelwasserstoff oder Ammoniak oxidiert werden.
