Ciliate
Die Ciliaten sind eine Gruppe von Protozoen, die durch die Anwesenheit von haarähnlichen Organellen namens cilia gekennzeichnet sind, die in der Struktur identisch mit eukaryotischer Flagella sind, aber typischerweise kürzer sind und in viel größeren Zahlen mit einem anderen wellenförmigen Muster als Flagella vorkommen. Cilia tritt in allen Mitgliedern der Gruppe auf und wird bei Schwimmen, Krabbeln, Anhaftung, Fütterung und Empfindung verschieden verwendet. Ciliates sind eine der bedeutendsten Gruppen von Protisten, die fast überall dort Wasser gibt - in Seen, Teichen, Ozeanen, Flüssen und Böden. Ciliates haben viele ektosymbiotische und endosymbiotische Mitglieder, sowie einige obligate und opportunistische Parasiten. Ciliates sind große Einzelzellen, einige erreichen 2 mm Länge und sind einige der komplexesten Protozoen in der Struktur. Der Begriff "Ciliophora" wird in der Klassifizierung als Auftrag verwendet. Ciliophora kann unter Protista oder Protozoen eingestuft werden. Der Begriff "Ciliata" wird auch als Klasse verwendet. Die Protisten-Klassifikation entwickelt sich rasch, und es ist nicht selten, diese Begriffe zu finden, die verwendet werden, um andere hierarchische Ebenen zu beschreiben.
