Genetischer Code
Der genetische Code ist der Satz von Regeln, durch die Informationen, die in genetischem Material codiert werden, in Proteine durch lebende Zellen übersetzt werden. Die biologische Decodierung erfolgt durch das Ribosom, das Aminosäuren in einer von mRNA spezifizierten Ordnung verbindet, wobei Transfer-RNA-Moleküle verwendet werden, um Aminosäuren zu tragen und die mRNA drei Nukleotide gleichzeitig zu lesen. Der genetische Code ist bei allen Organismen sehr ähnlich und kann in einer einfachen Tabelle mit 64 Einträgen ausgedrückt werden. Der Code definiert, wie Sequenzen dieser Nucleotid-Tripletts, genannt Codons, spezifizieren, welche Aminosäure als nächstes während der Proteinsynthese hinzugefügt wird. Mit einigen Ausnahmen spezifiziert ein Drei-Nukleotid-Codon in einer Nukleinsäuresequenz eine einzelne Aminosäure. Da die überwiegende Mehrheit der Gene mit genau demselben Code codiert ist, wird dieser Code oft als der kanonische oder standardisierte genetische Code oder einfach der genetische Code bezeichnet, obwohl sich tatsächlich einige Variantencodes entwickelt haben. Zum Beispiel beruht die Proteinsynthese in menschlichen Mitochondrien auf einem genetischen Code, der sich von dem genetischen Standardcode unterscheidet.
