Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden mechanische analoge Computer für spezialisierte militärische Anwendungen eingesetzt. Während dieser Zeit wurden die ersten elektronischen digitalen Computer entwickelt. Ursprünglich waren sie die Größe eines großen Raumes und verbrauchten so viel Kraft wie mehrere hundert moderne Personal Computer. Moderne Computer, die auf integrierten Schaltungen basieren, sind Millionen bis millionenfach fähiger als die frühen Maschinen und nehmen einen Bruchteil des Raumes ein.
