Pinophyta
Die Nadelbäume, die Teilung Pinophyta, auch bekannt als Division Coniferophyta oder Coniferae, sind eine von 12 vorhandenen Divisions-Taxa innerhalb des Königreichs Plantae und 10 in den vorhandenen Landpflanzen. Pinophyten sind Gymnospermen, Kegel-tragende Samenpflanzen mit Gefäßgewebe. Alle erhaltenen Nadelbäume sind waldige Pflanzen, die große Mehrheit sind Bäume mit nur wenigen Sträuchern. Typische Beispiele für Nadelbäume sind Zedern, Douglasien, Zypressen, Tannen, Wacholder, Kauri, Lärchen, Kiefern, Schierleder, Mammutbäume, Fichten und Eiben. Die Abteilung umfasst etwa acht Familien, 68 Gattungen und 630 lebende Arten. Obwohl die Gesamtzahl der Arten relativ klein ist, sind Nadelbäume von immenser ökologischer Bedeutung. Sie sind die dominierenden Pflanzen über riesige Landstriche, vor allem die borealen Wälder der nördlichen Hemisphäre, aber auch in ähnlichen kühlen Klimazonen in den Bergen weiter südlich. Boreale Nadelbäume haben viele Winteranpassungen. Die schmale konische Form der nördlichen Nadelbäume und ihre nach unten fallenden Gliedmaßen helfen ihnen, Schnee zu schneiden. Viele von ihnen ändern saisonal ihre Biochemie, um sie widerstandsfähiger gegen Einfrieren zu machen, genannt "Härten".
