In der Wissenschaft und in der Geschichte bezieht sich die Konsilität auf den Grundsatz, dass Beweise aus unabhängigen, nicht verwandten Quellen zu starken Schlussfolgerungen "konvergieren" können. Das heißt, wenn mehrere Quellen von Beweisen einverstanden sind, kann die Schlussfolgerung sehr stark sein, auch wenn keine der einzelnen Quellen von Beweisen sehr stark auf ihre eigene sind. Die meisten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse werden durch eine Konvergenz von Beweisen unterstützt: Wenn nicht, ist der Beweis vergleichsweise schwach, und es wird wahrscheinlich kein starker wissenschaftlicher Konsens geben. Das Prinzip basiert auf der Einheit des Wissens; Messung der gleichen Ergebnis durch mehrere verschiedene Methoden sollte zu der gleichen Antwort führen. Zum Beispiel sollte es egal sein, ob man den Abstand zwischen den Großen Pyramiden von Gizeh durch Laser-Entfernungsmessung, durch Satelliten-Bildgebung oder mit einem Meter-Stick misst - in allen drei Fällen sollte die Antwort ungefähr gleich sein. Aus dem gleichen Grund sollten sich verschiedene Datierungsmethoden in der Geochronologie einverstanden erklären, ein Ergebnis in der Chemie sollte keinem Ergebnis in der Geologie widersprechen. Das Wort Consilience wurde ursprünglich als Phrase "Konsilität der Induktionen" von William Whewell geprägt.
