Kontinentales Klima ist ein Klima, das durch eine wichtige jährliche Temperaturschwankung gekennzeichnet ist, da es keine bedeutenden Wasserkörper gibt. Oft ist die Wintertemperatur kalt genug, um eine feste Schneeperiode jedes Jahr zu stützen, und relativ moderate Niederschläge, die meistens im Sommer auftreten, obwohl es Ausnahmen gibt, wie etwa die oberöstlichen Ostküstengebiete Nordamerikas in Kanada, die eine gleichmäßige Verteilung des Niederschlags zeigen Muster heißt Feuchtes kontinentales Klima, aber es gibt auch trockene Kontinentalklima. Regionen mit einem kontinentalen Klima existieren in Teilen der nördlichen Hemisphären-Kontinente und in höheren Höhen in anderen Teilen der Welt. Nur wenige Gebiete, in den Bergen des pazifischen Nordwestens von Nordamerika und im Iran, im Norden des Irak, angrenzend an die Türkei, Afghanistan, Pakistan und Zentralasien zeigen ein Wintermaximum im Niederschlag.
