Eine Grafschaft ist eine geographische Region eines Landes, das für administrative oder andere Zwecke in bestimmten modernen Nationen verwendet wird. Seine Etymologie leitet sich aus dem altdeutschen Begriff, conté oder cunté ab und könnte eine Gerichtsbarkeit im Festland Europa unter der Souveränität eines Zählers oder eines Viscount bezeichnen. Das moderne Französisch ist comté, und seine Äquivalente in anderen Sprachen sind contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, Gau, etc .. Als die Normannen England eroberten, brachten sie den Begriff mit ihnen. Die Sachsen hatten bereits die Bezirke gegründet, die zu den historischen Grafschaften Englands wurden. Die Wikinger führten den Begriff Earl auf die britischen Inseln ein. So wurden "Earl" und "Earldom" als gleichbedeutend mit dem kontinentalen Gebrauch von "count" und "county" angenommen. So wurde der später-importierte Begriff ein Synonym für das englische Wortspiel oder im Modern English, Shire. Da ein Bezirk eine administrative Teilung des Königreichs war, entwickelte sich der Begriff "Grafschaft", um eine administrative Aufteilung der nationalen Regierung in den meisten modernen Gebrauch zu benennen.
