Darwins Finken
Darwins Finken sind eine Gruppe von etwa fünfzehn Arten von Passerinenvögeln. Sie werden oft als Unterfamilie Geospizinae oder Stamm Geospizini eingestuft. Es ist noch nicht klar, welche Vogelfamilie sie angehören, aber sie sind nicht mit den wahren Finken verwandt. Sie wurden zuerst von Charles Darwin auf den Galápagos-Inseln während der zweiten Reise des Beagles gesammelt. Alle finden sich nur auf den Galápagos Inseln, mit Ausnahme der Cocos Fink von Cocos Island. Der Begriff "Darwins Finken" wurde erstmals 1936 von Percy Lowe angewandt und 1947 von David Lack in seinem Buch Darwins Finken populär. David Lack stützte seine Analyse auf die große Sammlung von Museumsmustern, die von der 1905-06 Galápagos-Expedition der California Academy of Sciences gesammelt wurden, an die Lack sein Buch von 1947 widmete. Die Vögel variieren in der Größe von 10 bis 20 cm und wiegen zwischen 8 und 38 Gramm. Die kleinsten sind die Grasmücken-Finken und der größte ist der vegetarische Fink. Die wichtigsten Unterschiede zwischen den Arten sind in der Größe und Form ihrer Schnäbel, und die Schnäbel sind stark an verschiedene Nahrungsmittelquellen angepasst. Die Vögel sind alle matt gefärbt.
