In der Quantenmechanik ist die Quantendecohärenz der Verlust der Kohärenz oder die Reihenfolge der Phasenwinkel zwischen den Komponenten eines Systems in einer Quantenüberlagerung. Eine Konsequenz dieser Dephasierung ist das klassische oder probabilistisch additive Verhalten. Quantendekohärenz gibt das Auftreten von Wellenfunktion zusammen und rechtfertigt den Rahmen und die Intuition der klassischen Physik als eine akzeptable Approximation: Die Decoherenz ist der Mechanismus, durch den die klassische Grenze aus einem Quantenanfangspunkt hervorgeht und sie den Ort der quantenklassischen Grenze bestimmt. Decoherence tritt auf, wenn ein System mit seiner Umgebung thermodynamisch irreversibel wechselt. Dies verhindert, dass unterschiedliche Elemente in der Quantenüberlagerung der Wellenfunktion des Gesamtsystems sich gegenseitig stören. Die Decoherence ist seit den 1980er Jahren Gegenstand aktiver Forschung. Decoherence kann als der Verlust von Informationen aus einem System in die Umwelt betrachtet werden, da jedes System lose mit dem energetischen Zustand seiner Umgebung gekoppelt ist. Isoliert betrachtet, ist die Dynamik des Systems nicht einheitlich. So ist die Dynamik des Systems allein irreversibel.
