Die Beugung bezieht sich auf verschiedene Phänomene, die auftreten, wenn eine Welle auf ein Hindernis oder einen Schlitz trifft. In der klassischen Physik wird das Beugungsphänomen als die Interferenz von Wellen nach dem Huygens-Fresnel-Prinzip beschrieben. Diese charakteristischen Verhaltensweisen sind ausgestellt, wenn eine Welle auf ein Hindernis oder einen Schlitz trifft, der in seiner Größe mit seiner Wellenlänge vergleichbar ist. Ähnliche Effekte treten auf, wenn eine Lichtwelle durch ein Medium mit unterschiedlichem Brechungsindex fließt oder wenn sich eine Schallwelle durch ein Medium mit variierender akustischer Impedanz bewegt. Die Beugung erfolgt bei allen Wellen, einschließlich Schallwellen, Wasserwellen und elektromagnetischen Wellen wie sichtbares Licht, Röntgenstrahlen und Funkwellen. Da physikalische Objekte wellenartige Eigenschaften haben, tritt auch die Beugung mit Materie auf und kann nach den Prinzipien der Quantenmechanik untersucht werden. Der italienische Wissenschaftler Francesco Maria Grimaldi prägte das Wort "Beugung" und war der erste, der 1660 genaue Beobachtungen des Phänomens aufnahm.

Diffraction refers to various phenomena which occur when a wave encounters an obstacle or a slit. In classical physics, the diffraction phenomenon is described as the interference of waves according the Huygens Fresnel principle. These characteristic behaviors are exhibited when a wave encounters an obstacle or a slit that is comparable in size to its wavelength. Similar effects occur when a light wave travels through a medium with a varying refractive index, or when a sound wave travels through a medium with varying acoustic impedance. Diffraction occurs with all waves, including sound waves, water waves, and electromagnetic waves such as visible light, X-rays and radio waves. Since physical objects have wave-like properties, diffraction also occurs with matter and can be studied according to the principles of quantum mechanics. Italian scientist Francesco Maria Grimaldi coined the word "diffraction" and was the first to record accurate observations of the phenomenon in 1660.
