In der Optik ist ein Beugungsgitter ein optisches Bauteil mit einer periodischen Struktur, das Licht in mehrere in verschiedene Richtungen verlaufende Strahlen aufteilt und beugt. Aus diesem Grund werden Gitterroste üblicherweise in Monochromatoren und Spektrometern eingesetzt. Eine fotografische Folie mit einem feinen Muster aus lila Linien bildet ein komplexes Gitter. Für praktische Anwendungen haben Gitterroste im Allgemeinen Rippen oder Urteile auf ihrer Oberfläche und nicht dunkle Linien. Solche Gitter können entweder transmissiv oder reflektierend sein. Gitter, die die Phase anstatt der Amplitude des einfallenden Lichts modulieren, werden ebenfalls erzeugt, häufig unter Verwendung der Holographie. Die Prinzipien der Beugungsgitter wurden von James Gregory entdeckt, etwa ein Jahr nach Newtons Prismenexperimenten, zunächst mit Artefakten wie Vogelfedern. Das erste künstliche Beugungsgitter wurde um 1785 von Philadelphia Erfinder David Rittenhouse gemacht, der Haare zwischen zwei feingewindeten Schrauben anstarrte.

The directions of these beams depend on the spacing of the grating and the wavelength of the light so that the grating acts as the dispersive element. Because of this, gratings are commonly used in monochromators and spectrometers. A photographic slide with a fine pattern of purple lines forms a complex grating. For practical applications, gratings generally have ridges or rulings on their surface rather than dark lines. Such gratings can be either transmissive or reflective. Gratings which modulate the phase rather than the amplitude of the incident light are also produced, frequently using holography. The principles of diffraction gratings were discovered by James Gregory, about a year after Newton's prism experiments, initially with artifacts such as bird feathers. The first man-made diffraction grating was made around 1785 by Philadelphia inventor David Rittenhouse, who strung hairs between two finely threaded screws.
