Donezk
Donezk ist eine Industriestadt am Kalmius. Administrativ ist es ein Zentrum der Donetsk Oblast, während historisch ist es die inoffizielle Hauptstadt und größte Stadt der größeren wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Donez-Becken Region. Die Stadt Donezk ist neben einer anderen großen Stadt Makiivka und zusammen mit anderen umliegenden Städten bildet eine große Zersiedelung und Ballungsraum in der Region. Donezk ist ein wichtiges wirtschaftliches, industrielles und wissenschaftliches Zentrum der Ukraine mit einer hohen Konzentration von Unternehmen und qualifizierten Arbeitskräften. Die Stadt wurde 1869 von einem walisischen Geschäftsmann John Hughes gegründet, der ein Stahlwerk und mehrere Kohlebergwerke in der Region baute. Die Stadt wurde so genannt Yuzovka in Anerkennung seiner Rolle bei der Gründung. Während der sowjetischen Zeit wurde die Stahlindustrie der Stadt erweitert. 1924 wurde es in Stalino umbenannt, und 1932 wurde die Stadt zum Zentrum der Donetsk Region. Umbenannt Donezk im Jahr 1961, ist die Stadt heute das Zentrum für die Ukraine Kohlebergbau und bemerkenswerte Stahlindustrie Zentrum. Donezk hat derzeit eine Bevölkerung von über 982.000 Einwohnern und hat eine Metropolregion von über 2.000.000 Einwohnern.
