Dorset
Dorset / dɔrsɨt /, ist eine Grafschaft in Südwestengland an der englischen Kanalküste. Die zeremonielle Grafschaft umfasst die Nicht-Metropolitan Grafschaft, die von Dorset County Council regiert wird, und die Einheitsbehörden von Poole und Bournemouth. Mit einer Fläche von 2.653 Quadratkilometern grenzt Dorset Devon im Westen an, Somerset im Nordwesten, Wiltshire im Nordosten und Hampshire im Osten. Die Kreisstadt ist Dorchester, die im Süden liegt. Nach der Reorganisation der Kommunalverwaltung im Jahre 1974 wurde die Grenze des Kreises nach Osten erweitert, um die Hampshire-Städte Bournemouth und Christchurch zu übernehmen. Rund die Hälfte der Bevölkerung lebt im Südosten Dorset Ballungsraum, während der Rest der Grafschaft weitgehend ländlich mit einer niedrigen Bevölkerungsdichte ist. Die Grafschaft hat eine lange Geschichte der menschlichen Siedlung, die sich in die Jungsteinzeit zurückzieht. Die Römer eroberten Dorsets einheimischen keltischen Stamm, und während des frühen Mittelalters setzten sich die Sachsen in die Gegend und machten Dorset eine Grabstätte im 7. Jahrhundert. Der erste Viking-Raid auf den britischen Inseln trat in Dorset während des 8. Jahrhunderts auf und der schwarze Tod trat in Melcombe Regis im Jahre 1348 in England ein.
