Klassische Malapropismen leiten in der Regel ihre komische Wirkung aus dem Fehler des Benutzers, während Eierwürfel sind Fehler, die Kreativität oder Logik zeigen. Eggcorns beinhalten oft das Ersetzen eines unbekannten, archaischen oder obskuren Wortes mit einem allgemeineren oder modernen Wort. Der Begriff Eierkorn wurde von einem Professor für Linguistik, Geoffrey Pullum, im September 2003 als Reaktion auf einen Artikel von Mark Liberman auf der Website Language Log, ein Blog für Linguisten geprägt.
