Ellipse
Ellipse ist eine Reihe von Punkten, die in der Regel eine absichtliche Unterlassung eines Wortes, eines Satzes oder eines ganzen Abschnitts aus einem Text anzeigt, ohne seine ursprüngliche Bedeutung zu verändern. Je nach Kontext und Platzierung in einem Satz können Ellipsen auch einen unvollendeten Gedanken, eine führende Aussage, eine leichte Pause und eine nervöse oder unangenehme Stille anzeigen. Aposiopesis ist die Verwendung einer Ellipse, um in die Stille zu gehen - zum Beispiel: "Aber ich dachte, er war ..." Wenn am Anfang oder Ende eines Satzes platziert wird, kann die Ellipse auch ein Gefühl von Melancholie oder Sehnsucht inspirieren. Die häufigste Form einer Ellipse ist eine Reihe von drei Perioden oder Stopps oder eine vorkomponierte Triple-Dot-Glyphe. Die Verwendung des em-Bindestrichs kann die Verwendung der Ellipse, insbesondere im Dialog, überlappen. Style Guides haben oft ihre eigenen Regeln für die Verwendung von Ellipsen. Zum Beispiel empfiehlt das Chicago Manual of Style, dass eine Ellipse durch die Eingabe von drei Perioden gebildet wird, jeweils mit einem Platz auf beiden Seiten. Das Dreifachpunkt-Satzzeichen wird auch als Aufhängepunkt, Punkte der Ellipse, Perioden der Ellipse oder umgangssprachlich "Punkt-Punkt-Punkt" bezeichnet.
