Ulme
Elms sind Laub- und Halb-Laubbäume, die die Gattung Ulmus in der Pflanzenfamilie Ulmaceae umfassen. Die Gattung erschien zuerst in der miozänischen geologischen Periode vor etwa 20 Millionen Jahren und entstand in dem, was jetzt Zentralasien ist. Diese Bäume blühten und verbreiteten sich über die meisten nördlichen Hemisphären und bewohnten die gemäßigten und tropisch-montanischen Gebiete Nordamerikas und Eurasiens, die südwärts über den Äquator nach Indonesien reichten. Elms sind Bestandteile vieler Arten von Naturwäldern; Während des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts wurden viele Arten und Sorten auch als Zier-, Garten- und Parkbäume in Europa, Nordamerika und Teile der südlichen Hemisphäre, insbesondere Australasien, gepflanzt. Einige einzelne Ulmen erreichten große Größe und Alter. Doch in den letzten Jahrzehnten sind die meisten reifen Ulmen der europäischen oder nordamerikanischen Herkunft an der niederländischen Ulmenkrankheit gestorben, die durch einen Mikrofungus verursacht wurde, der von Borkenkäfern zerstreut wurde. Als Reaktion darauf wurden krankheitsresistente Sorten entwickelt, die in der Lage sind, die Ulme zur Forstwirtschaft und Landschaftsgestaltung wiederherzustellen.
