Bei der Berechnung ist ein Emulator Hardware oder Software oder beides, die die Funktionen eines Computersystems in einem anderen Computersystem dupliziert, das sich von dem ersten unterscheidet, so dass das emulierte Verhalten dem Verhalten des realen Systems sehr ähnlich ist. Der oben beschriebene Fokus auf exakte Reproduktion des Verhaltens steht im Gegensatz zu einigen anderen Formen der Computersimulation, bei der ein abstraktes Modell eines Systems simuliert wird.
