Eine mikrobielle Zyste ist ein ruhender oder ruhender Stadium eines Mikroorganismus, in der Regel ein Bakterium oder ein Protist oder selten ein wirbelloses Tier, das dem Organismus hilft, in ungünstigen Umgebungsbedingungen zu überleben. Encystment hilft auch der Mikrobe, sich leicht von einem Wirt zum anderen zu verteilen oder zu einer günstigeren Umgebung. Wenn die encysted-Mikrobe eine Umgebung erreicht, die für ihr Wachstum und ihr Überleben günstig ist, bricht die Zyste-Wand durch einen Prozess, der als Excystation bekannt ist, ab. Ungünstige Umgebungsbedingungen wie Mangel an Nährstoffen oder Sauerstoff, extreme Temperaturen, Mangel an Feuchtigkeit und Anwesenheit von toxischen Chemikalien, die für das Wachstum der Mikrobe nicht förderlich sind, lösen die Bildung einer Zyste aus.
