Ethnolinguistik
Ethnolinguistik ist ein Feld der Linguistik, das die Beziehung zwischen Sprache und Kultur studiert, und die Art und Weise, wie verschiedene ethnische Gruppen die Welt wahrnehmen. Es ist die Kombination zwischen Ethnologie und Linguistik. Erstere bezieht sich auf die Lebensweise einer ganzen Gemeinschaft, d.h. alle Merkmale, die eine Gemeinschaft von der anderen unterscheiden. Diese Merkmale machen die kulturellen Aspekte einer Gemeinschaft oder einer Gesellschaft. Ethnolinguisten lernen die Art und Weise, wie Wahrnehmung und Konzeptualisierung die Sprache beeinflusst und zeigt, wie dies mit verschiedenen Kulturen und Gesellschaften verknüpft ist. Ein Beispiel ist die Art und Weise, wie räumliche Orientierung in verschiedenen Kulturen ausgedrückt wird. In vielen Gesellschaften werden Worte für die Himmelsrichtungen Ost und West von Begriffen für Sonnenaufgang / Sonnenuntergang abgeleitet. Die Nomenklatur für die Himmelsrichtungen von Inuit-Sprechern von Grönland basiert jedoch auf geographischen Landmarken wie dem Flusssystem und der Lage an der Küste. Ähnlich fehlt dem Yurok die Idee der Himmelsrichtungen; Sie orientieren sich in Bezug auf ihre Hauptgeographie, den Klamath-Fluss.
