Etymologie
Etymologie ist das Studium der Geschichte der Worte, ihrer Herkunft, und wie sich ihre Form und Bedeutung im Laufe der Zeit verändert haben. Durch eine Erweiterung bedeutet der Begriff "Etymologie" den Ursprung des jeweiligen Wortes. Für Sprachen mit einer langen schriftlichen Geschichte verwenden Etymologen Texte in diesen Sprachen und Texten über die Sprachen, um Wissen darüber zu sammeln, wie Worte in früheren Perioden ihrer Geschichte verwendet wurden und wann sie die betreffenden Sprachen betraten. Etymologen wenden auch die Methoden der vergleichenden Linguistik an, um Informationen über Sprachen zu rekonstruieren, die zu alt sind, damit direkte Informationen verfügbar sind. Durch die Analyse von verwandten Sprachen mit einer Technik, die als Vergleichsmethode bekannt ist, können Linguisten Schlussfolgerungen über ihre gemeinsame Muttersprache und ihr Vokabular machen. Auf diese Weise wurden Wortwurzeln gefunden, die bis hin zum Ursprung der indoeuropäischen Sprachfamilie zurückverfolgt werden können. Obwohl die etymologische Forschung ursprünglich aus der philologischen Tradition stammte, wird derzeit viel etymologische Forschung an Sprachfamilien durchgeführt, in denen wenig oder keine frühe Dokumentation vorhanden ist, wie Uralic und Austronesian.
