Eutheria
Eutheria ist eine von zwei Säugetier-Clades mit vorhandenen Mitgliedern, die in der frühen Kreide oder vielleicht die Spät-Jurassic divergierten. Die andere ist die Metatheria, die Beuteltiere enthält, von denen die meisten ihre Neonate in Beuteln aufnehmen. Außer dem Virginia opossum, das ein Metatherian ist, sind alle Säugetiere, die nach Europa, Afrika, Asien und Nordamerika nördlich von Mexiko einheimisch sind, Eutherier. Extante Eutherier, ihre letzte gemeinsame Vorfahren, und alle ausgestorbenen Nachkommen dieses Ahnen sind Placentale, in der Gruppe Placentalia. Die Eutherier unterscheiden sich von den Nichtsanderern durch verschiedene Merkmale der Füße, Knöchel, Kiefer und Zähne. Einer der großen Unterschiede zwischen plazentalen und nonplacental Eutherians ist, dass Placentalen fehlende epipubische Knochen, die in allen anderen fossilen und lebenden Säugetieren vorhanden sind. Die älteste bekannte eutherische Art ist Juramaia sinensis, datiert vor 160 Millionen Jahren aus dem Jurassic in China. Der Name "Eutheria" wurde von Thomas Henry Huxley im Jahre 1880 eingeführt, um eine weitgehend definierte Gruppe als Placentalia zu umfassen.
