Die direkte Prüfung oder Prüfung in-Chief ist ein Schritt in den Prozess der Durchführung von Beweisen von Zeugen in einem Gericht. Direkte Untersuchung ist die Befragung eines Zeugen von der Partei, die ihn oder sie in einem Prozeß angerufen hat. Eine direkte Prüfung wird in der Regel durchgeführt, um Beweise zur Unterstützung von Tatsachen hervorzurufen, die ein erforderliches Element der Behauptung oder Verteidigung einer Partei erfüllen. Bei der direkten Prüfung ist es generell verboten, führende Fragen zu stellen. Dies verhindert, dass ein Anwalt Antworten auf ein günstiges Zeugnis abgibt. Eine Ausnahme von dieser Regel tritt auf, wenn eine Seite einen Zeugen genannt hat, aber sie ist entweder verstanden oder wird bald klar, dass der Zeuge der Fragesteller-Seite der Kontroverse feindlich ist. Der Anwalt kann dann das Gericht bitten, die Person zu erklären, die er oder sie zum Stand ein feindliches Zeugnis gerufen hat. Wenn das Gericht dies tut, kann der Rechtsanwalt danach den Zeugen mit führenden Fragen bei der direkten Prüfung beurteilen. Die Techniken der direkten Untersuchung werden in Kursen über Trial Advocacy gelehrt. Jede direkte Untersuchung ist in die Gesamtfallstrategie durch ein Thema und eine Theorie integriert oder mit fortgeschrittenen Strategien eine Reihe von Aufwand.

The Direct Examination or Examination-in-Chief is one stage in the process of adducing evidence from witnesses in a court of law. Direct examination is the questioning of a witness by the party who called him or her, in a trial. Direct examination is usually performed to elicit evidence in support of facts which will satisfy a required element of a party's claim or defense. In direct examination, one is generally prohibited from asking leading questions. This prevents a lawyer from feeding answers to a favorable witness. An exception to this rule occurs if one side has called a witness, but it is either understood, or soon becomes plain, that the witness is hostile to the questioner's side of the controversy. The lawyer may then ask the court to declare the person he or she has called to the stand a hostile witness. If the court does so, the lawyer may thereafter ply the witness with leading questions during direct examination. The techniques of direct examination are taught in courses on Trial Advocacy. Each direct examination is integrated with the overall case strategy through either a theme and theory or, with more advanced strategies, a line of effort.
