Exaptionen sind sowohl in der Anatomie als auch im Verhalten üblich. Vogelfedern sind ein klassisches Beispiel: Anfänglich können sie sich zur Temperaturregulierung entwickelt haben, wurden aber später für den Flug angepasst. Das Interesse an der Exaptation bezieht sich sowohl auf den Prozess als auch auf die Produkte der Evolution: der Prozess, der komplexe Merkmale schafft und die Produkte, die unvollständig entwickelt werden können.
