Ferredoxin
Ferredoxine sind Eisen-Schwefel-Proteine, die den Elektronentransfer in einer Reihe von metabolischen Reaktionen vermitteln. Der Begriff "Ferredoxin" wurde von D.C. Wharton von der DuPont Co. geprägt und auf das "Eisenprotein" angewendet, das 1962 von Mortenson, Valentine und Carnahan aus dem anaeroben Bakterium Clostridium pasteurianum gereinigt wurde. Ein weiteres Redoxprotein, isoliert von Spinat-Chloroplasten von Tagawa und Arnon im Jahre 1962, wurde als "Chloroplast-Ferredoxin" bezeichnet. Das Chloroplast-Ferredoxin ist sowohl an zyklischen als auch an nicht-zyklischen Photophosphorylierungsreaktionen der Photosynthese beteiligt. Bei der nicht-zyklischen Photophosphorylierung ist Ferredoxin der letzte Elektronenakzeptor und reduziert das Enzym NADP + -Reduktase. Es akzeptiert Elektronen, die aus Sonnenlicht-angeregtem Chlorophyll gewonnen werden, und überträgt sie auf das Enzym Ferredoxin: NADP + Oxidoreduktase EC 1.18.1.2. Ferredoxine sind kleine Proteine, die Eisen- und Schwefelatome enthalten, die als Eisen-Schwefel-Cluster organisiert sind. Diese biologischen "Kondensatoren" können Elektronen annehmen oder entladen, was sich in den Oxidationsstufen der Eisenatome ändert. Auf diese Weise fungiert Ferredoxin als Elektronentransfer in biologischen Redoxreaktionen.
