Newcastle-Krankheit ist eine ansteckende Vogel-Krankheit, die viele inländische und wilde Vogelarten betrifft; Es ist für den Menschen übertragbar. Es wurde erstmals in Java, Indonesien, 1926 und 1927 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, identifiziert. Allerdings kann es schon 1898 vorherrschen, als eine Krankheit alle Hausgeflügel im Nordwesten Schottlands auslöste. Seine Auswirkungen sind am häufigsten im Hausgeflügel aufgrund ihrer hohen Anfälligkeit und das Potenzial für schwere Auswirkungen einer Epizootie auf die Geflügelindustrie. Es ist für viele Länder endemisch. Die Exposition von Menschen mit infizierten Vögeln kann zu leichten Konjunktivitis und Influenza-ähnlichen Symptomen führen, aber das Virus der Newcastle-Krankheit stellt ansonsten keine Gefahr für die menschliche Gesundheit dar. Das Interesse an der Verwendung von NDV als Antikrebsmittel ist aus der Fähigkeit von NDV entstanden, selektiv menschliche Tumorzellen mit begrenzter Toxizität auf normale Zellen abzutöten. Keine Behandlung für NDV besteht, aber die Verwendung von prophylaktischen Impfstoffen und sanitären Maßnahmen reduziert die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Ausbrüchen.
