Gamma-ray-Astronomie ist die astronomische Beobachtung von Gammastrahlen, die energischste Form elektromagnetische Strahlung mit Photonenenergien über 100 keV. Die Mechanismen, die Gammastrahlen aussenden, sind vielfältig, meist identisch mit denen, die Röntgenstrahlen emittieren, aber bei höheren Energien, einschließlich der Elektronen-Positronen-Vernichtung, des Inverse-Compton-Effekts und in einigen Fällen auch der Zerfall von radioaktivem Material im Raum, der extreme Ereignisse wie Supernovae widerspiegelt Und Hypernovae und das Verhalten der Materie unter extremen Bedingungen, wie bei Pulsaren und Blazaren. Die bisher gemessenen höchsten Photonenenergien liegen im TeV-Bereich, wobei die Aufzeichnung von einem "außerordentlichen Ausbruch" des Blazar Markarian 501 im Jahr 1997 gehalten wurde, was Photonen mit 16 TeV ergibt.
