Geoid
Das Geoid ist die Form, die die Oberfläche der Ozeane unter dem Einfluss der Erdgravitation und der Rotation allein in der Abwesenheit von anderen Einflüssen wie Wind und Gezeiten nehmen würde. Die permanente Abweichung zwischen dem Geoid und dem mittleren Meeresspiegel wird als Ozeanoberflächentopographie bezeichnet. Alle Punkte auf der Geoidoberfläche haben das gleiche Skalarpotential - es gibt keinen Unterschied in der potentiellen Energie zwischen zwei. Speziell ist das Geoid die Äquipotentialfläche, die mit der mittleren Ozeanoberfläche der Erde zusammenfallen würde, wenn die Ozeane und die Atmosphäre im Gleichgewicht waren, in Ruhe in Bezug auf die rotierende Erde und durch die Kontinente ausgedehnt wurden. Nach Gauss, der es zuerst beschrieb, ist es die "mathematische Figur der Erde", eine glatte, aber höchst unregelmäßige Oberfläche, die nicht der tatsächlichen Oberfläche der Erdkruste entspricht, sondern einer Oberfläche, die nur durch umfangreiche Gravitation bekannt sein kann Messungen und Berechnungen. Obwohl es in der Geschichte der Geodäsie und Geophysik seit fast zweihundert Jahren ein wichtiges Konzept ist, wurde es in den letzten Jahrzehnten nur in hoher Präzision definiert.
