Geometrie
Geometrie ist ein Zweig der Mathematik, der sich mit Fragen der Form, Größe, relativen Position der Figuren und der Eigenschaften des Raumes beschäftigt. Archimedes entwickelte geniale Techniken für die Berechnung von Gebieten und Bänden, in vielerlei Hinsicht antizipieren modernen integralen Kalkül. Das Feld der Astronomie, vor allem, wenn es darum geht, die Positionen der Sterne und Planeten auf der Himmelssphäre abzubilden und die Beziehung zwischen den Bewegungen der Himmelskörper zu beschreiben, diente als wichtige Quelle für geometrische Probleme während der nächsten eineinhalb Jahrtausende. In der klassischen Welt wurden sowohl die Geometrie als auch die Astronomie als Teil des Quadriviums angesehen, eine Untermenge der sieben liberalen Künste, die für einen freien Bürger als wesentlich angesehen wurden.
