In der lateinischen und englischen Grammatik ist die Gerund eine nicht endliche Verbform, die als Substantiv fungieren kann. Der englische gerund endet in -ing; Das gleiche Verbform dient auch als das englische gegenwärtige Partizip und als reines verbales Substantiv. Der Gerund ist die Form, die die Handlung des Verbes nennt. In einigen Fällen dient ein Substantiv, das in -ing endet, manchmal als Gerund, während er zu anderen Zeiten als Nicht-Gerund dient, das das Produkt aus einer Aktion anzeigt. Der letztere Fall kann oft durch das Vorhandensein eines Bestimmers vor dem Substantiv, wie dem, a, oder sie in diesen Beispielen unterschieden werden. Der lateinische Gerund ist eine Verbform, die sich ähnlich wie ein Substantiv verhält, obwohl es nur in bestimmten schrägen Fällen auftreten kann. In Bezug auf andere Sprachen kann der Begriff gerund auf ein Formular angewendet werden, das noun-ähnliche Verwendungen wie die lateinischen und englischen gerunds, oder in einigen Fällen zu verschiedenen anderen nicht-endlichen Verbformen, wie adverbialen Partizipien hat. Gerund stammt aus dem lateinischen Gerundium, das sich selbst aus dem gerundiven des lateinischen Verbes gero, nämlich gerundus, ergibt, was bedeutet, "durchgeführt zu werden".
