Globulärer Cluster
Ein globulärer Cluster ist eine sphärische Sammlung von Sternen, die einen galaktischen Kern als Satelliten umkreist. Globuläre Cluster sind sehr eng an die Schwerkraft gebunden, was ihnen ihre sphärischen Formen und relativ hohen stellaren Dichten zu ihren Zentren gibt. Der Name dieser Sterngruppe ist aus dem lateinischen Globulus - einer kleinen Sphäre - abgeleitet. Ein globulärer Cluster wird manchmal einfacher als globulär bekannt. Globuläre Cluster, die im Halo einer Galaxie gefunden werden, enthalten wesentlich mehr Sterne und sind viel älter als die weniger dichten galaktischen oder offenen Cluster, die in der Scheibe gefunden werden. Globulare Cluster sind ziemlich häufig; Es gibt etwa 150 bis 158 derzeit bekannte Kugelsternhaufen in der Milchstraße, mit vielleicht 10 bis 20 noch unentdeckten. Große Galaxien können mehr haben: Andromeda, zum Beispiel, kann bis zu 500 haben.
