Graf
Graf oder Gräfin ist ein historischer Titel des deutschen Adels, meist übersetzt als Graf. Als Zwischenstufe zwischen edlen Reihen betrachtet, wird der Titel oft als gleichbedeutend mit dem britischen "Earl" behandelt. Der Haupttitel Graf ist in verschiedenen europäischen Territorien üblich, wo Deutsch die offizielle oder einheimische Zunge ist, z. B. Österreich, Deutschland, Schweiz, Luxemburg, Liechtenstein, Elsaß, die baltischen Staaten und andere Habsburger Kronländer. Seit August 1919 sind in Deutschland alle gesetzlichen Privilegien des Adels offiziell abgeschafft worden, und Graf wird wie jeder andere erbliche Titel als Teil des gesetzlichen Nachnamens behandelt. In Österreich ist seine Verwendung, wie bei allen erblichen Titeln und nobiliären Partikeln, gesetzlich verboten; In der Schweiz ist der Titel nicht gesetzlich anerkannt. Während in Luxemburg und Liechtenstein der Titel weiterhin anerkannt, gebraucht und gelegentlich vom Nationalen Ehrengast, dem amtierenden Monarchen, gewährt wird. Aus der mittelalterlichen Ära herrschte ein Graf in der Regel ein Gebiet, das als Grafschaft bekannt ist.
