Die große Mehrheit der Pflanzenarten sind Glykophyten, Pflanzen, die nicht salztolerant sind und durch hohen Salzgehalt ziemlich leicht beschädigt werden. Eine quantitative Maßnahme der Salztoleranz ist die "totale gelöste Feststoffe" in Bewässerungswasser, die eine Pflanze tolerieren kann. Meerwasser enthält typischerweise 40 Gramm pro Liter gelöste Salze. Bohnen und Reis können etwa 1-3 g / l tolerieren und gelten als Glykophyten. Am anderen Extrem wächst Salicornia bigelovii bei 70 g / l gelösten Feststoffen gut und ist ein vielversprechender Halophyt für den Einsatz als Getreide. Pflanzen wie Gerste und die Dattelpalme können etwa 5 g / l tolerieren und können als Randhalophyten betrachtet werden. Die Anpassung an salzhaltige Umgebungen durch Halophyten kann die Form von Salztoleranz oder Salzvermeidung annehmen.
