Hipparchus
Hipparchus von Nicaea, war ein griechischer Astronom, Geograph und Mathematiker der hellenistischen Zeit. Er gilt als Begründer der Trigonometrie, ist aber berühmt für seine zufällige Entdeckung der Präzession der Äquinoktien. Hipparchus wurde in Nicaea, Bithynia geboren und starb wahrscheinlich auf der Insel Rhodos. Er ist bekannt, dass er von 162 bis 127 v.Chr. Ein Arbeitsstimmer war. Hipparchus gilt als der größte alte astronomische Beobachter und von einigen der größte Gesamtastronom der Antike. Er war der erste, dessen quantitative und genaue Modelle für die Bewegung der Sonne und des Mondes überleben. Dazu nutzte er sicherlich die Beobachtungen und vielleicht die mathematischen Techniken, die über Jahrhunderte von den Babyloniern und anderen Menschen aus Mesopotamien angesammelt wurden. Er entwickelte Trigonometrie und konstruierte trigonometrische Tische, und er löste mehrere Probleme der sphärischen Trigonometrie. Mit seinen Sonnen- und Mondtheorien und seiner Trigonometrie kann er als erster eine zuverlässige Methode zur Vorhersage von Sonnenfinsternis entwickelt haben.
