Quintus Horatius Flaccus, bekannt in der englischsprachigen Welt als Horaz, war der führende römische Lyriker während der Zeit des Augustus. Der Rhetoriker Quintillian betrachtete seine Oden als nur die einzigen lateinischen Texte, die es lohnt zu lesen: "Er kann manchmal hoch sein, aber er ist auch voller Charme und Gnade, vielseitig in seinen Figuren und glücklich waghalsig in seiner Wortwahl." Horaz hat auch elegante Hexameter-Verse und ätzige Iambic-Poesie gefertigt. Die Hexameter sind amüsant und dennoch ernsthafte, freundliche Töne, die den alten Satiristen Persius dazu bringen, zu kommentieren: "Als sein Freund lacht, legt Horaz schlau den Finger auf seine Schuld, einmal lass ihn ein, er spielt über die Herzstränge." Seine Karriere fiel mit Roms bedeutsamen Wechsel von Republik nach Reich zusammen. Ein Offizier in der republikanischen Armee, der in der Schlacht von Philippi im Jahre 42 v. Chr. Besiegt wurde, war er von Octavians Rechtsmann in zivilen Angelegenheiten, Maecenas, befreundet und wurde ein Sprecher des neuen Regimes. Für einige Kommentatoren war seine Assoziation mit dem Regime eine heikle Balance, in der er ein starkes Maß an Unabhängigkeit beibehielt, aber für andere war er in John Drydens Phrase "ein gutherziger Hofsklave".
