From Old French, from Medieval Latin Jacōbīnus, from Late Latin Jacōbus James; applied to the Dominicans, from the proximity of the church of St Jacques (St James) to their first convent in Paris; the political club originally met in the convent in 1789.

Die Gesellschaft der Freunde der Verfassung, die gemeinhin als Jacobin Club bekannt ist, war der berühmteste und einflussreichste politische Verein in der Entwicklung der Französischen Revolution. Es gab mindestens 7.000 Kapitel in ganz Frankreich, mit einer Mitgliedschaft auf eine halbe Million oder mehr geschätzt. Auf ihrer Höhe im Jahre 1793-94 waren die Klubführer die radikalste und egalitäre Gruppe in der Revolution. Geleitet von Maximilien de Robespierre, kontrollierten sie die Regierung von Juni 1793 bis Juli 1794, verabschiedeten viel radikale Gesetzgebung und jagten nieder und hielten ihre Gegner in der Herrschaft des Terrors. Nach dem Fall von Robespierre fand eine konservativere Reaktion statt. Der Verein war geschlossen und viele seiner Führer wurden hingerichtet. Bis heute werden die Begriffe Jakobin und Jakobinismus von Mäßigen und Konservativen als Pejorative für radikale, linke revolutionäre Politik verwendet, besonders wenn sie Dogmatismus und gewalttätige Repression zeigt.
