Jolson
Jolson ist ein Musical mit einem Buch von Francis Essex und Rob Bettinson und eine Partitur, die aus Melodien von einigen der allzeit größten Songwriter von Tin Pan Alley zusammengesetzt ist. Basierend auf dem Leben des legendären Sängers Al Jolson, einer der beliebtesten Animateure Amerikas, ist er dreißig Jahre seiner Karriere. Aus dem Rampenlicht betont die Handlung seine persönlichen Fehler so viel wie es seine beruflichen Erfolge macht. Weitere wichtige Charaktere sind seine Frau Ruby Keeler und sein langjähriger Freund und Agent Louis Epstein. Die West End Produktion, Regie von Bettinson, eröffnete am 26. Oktober 1995 im Victoria Palace Theatre, wo es für siebzehn Monate lief. Die Besetzung umfasste Brian Conley als Jolson, Sally Ann Triplett als Keeler und John Bennett als Epstein. Unter der Schirmherrschaft der Laurence Olivier Awards gewann sie den American Express Award für Best New Musical. Olivier Nominierungen gingen zu Conley für den besten Schauspieler in einem Musical und Bennett für die beste unterstützende Leistung in einem Musical. Ein Original-Album wurde während der Aufführungen vom 29. Februar, 1. März und 2. März 1996 live aufgenommen und von First Night Records veröffentlicht.
