Karoo
Die Karoo ist eine halbwüsten Naturregion Südafrikas. Es gibt keine genaue Definition dessen, was die Karoo ausmacht, und daher auch nicht ihr Ausmaß. Die Karoo ist teilweise durch ihre Topographie, teils ihre Geologie, aber vor allem ihre niedrigen Niederschläge, trockene Luft, wolkenlosen Himmel und extreme Hitze und Kälte definiert. Heute ist es immer noch ein Ort von großer Hitze und Frost, und ein jährlicher Niederschlag von zwischen 50-250 mm, obwohl auf einigen der Berge kann es 250-500 mm höher als auf den Ebenen sein. Allerdings befindet sich das Grundwasser in der Karoo, das durch Bohrlöcher abgegriffen werden kann, so dass dauerhafte Siedlungen und Schafzucht möglich sind.
