Leipzig (/ laɪptsɪɡ /; deutsche Aussprache: (hören)) ist eine Stadt im Bundesland Sachsen. Es hat rund 530.000 Einwohner und ist das Herz der Mitteldeutschen Metropolregion. Leipzig liegt etwa 150 Kilometer südlich von Berlin am Zusammenfluss der weißen Elster-, Pleisse- und Parthe-Flüsse am südlichen Ende der norddeutschen Tiefebene. Leipzig ist eine Handelsstadt, seit mindestens die Zeit des Heiligen Römischen Reiches, die an der Kreuzung der Via Regia und Via Imperii sitzt, zwei wichtige mittelalterliche Handelswege. Zu einer Zeit war Leipzig eines der bedeutendsten europäischen Zentren für Lernen und Kultur in Bereichen wie Musik und Verlagswesen. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde Leipzig zu einem bedeutenden städtischen Zentrum der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (Ostdeutschland), doch seine kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Bedeutung ging zurück, obwohl Ostdeutschland die reichste Wirtschaft im sowjetischen Block war. Leipzig spielte später eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Veranlassung des Falles des Kommunismus in Osteuropa durch Ereignisse, die in und um die Nikolaikirche stattfanden.
