Lherzolit ist eine Art ultramafischen Eruptivgestein. Es ist ein grobkörniger Gestein, bestehend aus 40 bis 90% Olivin zusammen mit signifikanten Orthopyroxen und weniger kalkhaltigen Chrom reichen Clinopyroxen. Minor Mineralien gehören Chrom und Aluminium Spinelle und Granate. Plagioklase kann bei Lherzoliten und anderen Peridotiten auftreten, die in relativ geringen Tiefen kristallisieren. In größerer Tiefe ist Plagioklas instabil und wird durch Spinell ersetzt. Bei etwa 90 km Tiefe wird der pyrope-Granat zur stabilen Aluminiumphase. Garnet Lherzolit ist ein Hauptbestandteil des Erdmantels der Erde. Lherzolit ist aus dem unteren ultramafischen Teil der Ophiolit-Komplexe, aus alpinen Peridotit-Massiven, aus Bruchzonen angrenzend an Mittel-Ozean-Rippen und als Xenolithen in Kimberlit-Pipes und Alkali-Basalts bekannt. Das partielle Schmelzen von Spinell-Lherzolith ist eine der primären Quellen des basaltischen Magmas. Der Name stammt aus dem Lherz-Massiv, einem alpinen Peridotit-Komplex, bei Étang de Lers bei Massat in den französischen Pyrenäen; Lherz ist die archaische Schreibweise dieses Ortes.

Lherzolite is a type of ultramafic igneous rock. It is a coarse grained rock consisting of 40 to 90% olivine along with significant orthopyroxene and lesser calcic chromium rich clinopyroxene. Minor minerals include chromium and aluminium spinels and garnets. Plagioclase can occur in lherzolites and other peridotites that crystallize at relatively shallow depths. At greater depth plagioclase is unstable and is replaced by spinel. At approximately 90 km depth, pyrope garnet becomes the stable aluminous phase. Garnet lherzolite is a major constituent of the Earth's upper mantle. Lherzolite is known from the lower ultramafic part of ophiolite complexes, from alpine-type peridotite massifs, from fracture zones adjacent to mid-oceanic ridges, and as xenoliths in kimberlite pipes and alkali basalts. Partial melting of spinel lherzolite is one of the primary sources of basaltic magma. The name is derived from the Lherz Massif, an alpine peridotite complex, at Étang de Lers, near Massat in the French Pyrenees; Lherz is the archaic spelling of this location.
