Llywelyn der Große
Llywelyn the Great, voller Name Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, war ein Prinz von Gwynedd in Nord-Wales und schließlich de facto Herrscher über die meisten von Wales. Durch eine Kombination aus Krieg und Diplomatie dominierte er seit 40 Jahren Wales. Während Llywelyns Kindheit wurde Gwynedd von zwei seiner Onkel regiert, die das Königreich zwischen ihnen nach dem Tod von Llywelyns Großvater Owain Gwynedd im Jahre 1170 spalteten. Im Jahre 1210 verschlechterten sich die Beziehungen, und Johannes ging 1211 in Gwynedd ein. Llywelyn war gezwungen, Begriffe zu suchen und alle Länder östlich des Flusses Conwy aufzugeben, konnte aber im folgenden Jahr im Allianz mit den anderen walisischen Fürsten wiederhergestellt werden. Er verbündete sich mit den Baronen, die Johannes zwangen, die Magna Carta 1215 zu unterzeichnen.
