Jahrhunderts wurden alle Gefäße aus Holz aus einem einzigen oder mehreren Holzstücken hergestellt, die typischerweise aus dem Stamm eines Nadelbaums bestanden. Ab dem 16. Jahrhundert wurden die Schiffe oft aus einer Größe gebaut, die Masten mächtiger und dicker machte, als man aus einzelnen Baumstämmen herstellen konnte. Auf diesen größeren Schiffen, um die erforderliche Höhe zu erreichen, wurden die Masten aus bis zu vier Abschnitten gebaut, die in der Reihenfolge der aufsteigenden Höhe über den Decks als die unteren, top, topgallant und königlichen Masten bekannt sind. Den unteren Abschnitten eine ausreichende Dicke zu geben, musste sie aus getrennten Holzstücken aufbauen.
