Mandrill
Der Mandrill ist ein Primas der Alten Affenfamilie, eng verwandt mit den Pavianen und noch näher am Bohrer. Es findet sich im südlichen Kamerun, Gabun, Äquatorialguinea und Kongo. Mandrills leben meist in tropischen Regenwäldern und Wald-Savannen-Mosaiken. Sie leben in Gruppen namens Horden. Mandrills haben eine omnivoröse Diät, die hauptsächlich aus Früchten und Insekten besteht. Ihre Paarungszeit findet von Juni bis Oktober statt. Sowohl der Mandrill als auch der Bohrer wurden einmal als Paviane in der Gattung Papio eingestuft, aber die jüngsten Forschungen haben festgestellt, dass sie in ihre eigene Gattung, Mandrillus, getrennt werden sollten. Mandrills sind die größten Affen der Welt. Charles Darwin schrieb in The Descent of Man, dass "kein anderes Mitglied in der ganzen Klasse von Säugetieren in so außergewöhnlicher Weise wie die erwachsenen männlichen Mandrills gefärbt ist." Der Mandrill wird von IUCN als anfällig eingestuft.
