Maracas (Aussprache (Hilfe · Info)), manchmal auch Rumba Shaker und verschiedene andere Namen genannt, sind Percussion-Musikinstrumente - Rasseln, die in Lateinamerika entstanden sind. Sie werden als Idiophone klassifiziert. Die Spieler halten sie an ihren Griffen, meist paarweise und schütteln sie. Traditionelle Maracas bestehen aus Hohlkugeln aus getrockneter Kürbisschale (cuia "koo-ya") oder Kokosnussschale, gefüllt mit Samen oder getrockneten Bohnen und auf einem Holzgriff montiert. Moderne Maracakugeln sind auch aus Leder, Holz oder Kunststoff gefertigt. Oft ist ein Ball hoch und der andere niedrig. Es gibt archäologische Hinweise auf Lehmmaracas in Kolumbien vor 1500 Jahren. Das Wort Maraca soll aus der Tupi-Sprache von Brasilien kommen, wo es sich um "ma-ra-KAH" handelt. Sie sind in Trinidad, Dominica und den französischen Antillen als Shac-Shacs bekannt. Die Ledermaracas wurden 1955 von einem venezolanischen Schlagzeuger eingeführt. Maracas sind ein einfaches Instrument, aber erfordern bescheidene Geschicklichkeit, um in der Zeit zur Musik zu spielen.
